Netball Programme 2021

Theresa Smith —

Another strong season for the BHS netball programme; we had 100 players, 13 student umpires and 12 student coaches across 10 Wednesday teams and 8 Saturday teams.

The season was cut short, with SISS Tournament canceled and the teams that made semifinals and finals were unable to play out these games. Significant final standings for the season were:

WEDNESDAY
The A team made Supernet Reserve semifinals
17A – 7th & 8th in the A Division Section 1

17C – 3rd & 4th in C Grade Open
10A – 3rd & 4th in Junior Grade Div 1 Section 2
10B – placed 5th in Junior Grade Div 2 Section 1

SATURDAY we had an impressive four teams set to play semi finals.
A team in 2nd Grade Division 1
17A in U17 Division 1 - only one loss
17B in U17 Division 3
10A in U15 Division 2 and grade winners

Our netball programme could not be as successful without support from the school, the PTA and pub charities. Mr Holstein, Mr Findlay, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Guillemot, all played a huge role in supporting the programme behind the scenes as well as coming to various games throughout the season.

Our programme's success also relies on our amazing coaches and managers:

Community Coaches: Tracy Scott - A, Sophie Charlton - 17A, Chontelle Radford - 10A & Brooke Williams - 9A.

Student Coaches: Kimy & Melissa – 9C, Manu & Maddi – 9B, Rere & Madi – 10C, Cathy & Erin – 10B, Tahlia & Lexi – 17C, Tasmin & Yanah – 17B.

Managers: Michelle Eder - A, Liz Sawyer - 17A, Vic Ovens - 17A, Kellie Sim - 17B, Kathryn McBrearty - 17B, Ms A Davison - 17C, Tara O'Leary - 10A, Sally McMorran - 10B, Kathryn Higham - 10C, Ronelle Bianchet - 9B, Ms E Davison - 9C.

RUNNER UP COACH OF THE YEAR - Rerekiao O'Connell and Madison Garret

COACH OF THE YEAR - Sophie Charlton: Juggling study, work, her own netball and social commitments Sophie ensured she remained 100% committed to the team. Sophie had many successes ensuring that her huge squad of 11 all had plenty of opportunities to thrive and develop and created a positive culture where the team focused and strengthened their teamwork. Her friendly but professional approach with her team and other administrators ensured the season ran smoothly and was super organised.

TEAM SPIRIT AWARD - 9C Team

TEAM OF THE YEAR - 17A, who worked together both on and off the court to ensure personal and team successes. The players supported, encouraged and fueled each other and worked hard to implement what their coach taught them. This showed in the many successes achieved this season. In the School Sport Canterbury competition 17A was graded and remained competitive in the top grade and section of the entire Wednesday competition, this was a first for our B (17A) team. In the ChCh Netball Centre competition held on Saturdays, this team - which was placed in the top U17 division and section - played 15 games, winning 14. If finals had gone ahead, this team would have been sure to take out the grade. At the Ashburton Exchange they also won convincingly.

CONTRIBUTION TO NETBALL - Tahlia Perham
Tahlia joined the A team in 2019 and has knocked up many hours training and playing for the A team. Through the years Tahlia continued to absorb new skills and strategies adding them to her bag of tricks. Although at times she needed some encouragement to push out a full game… or attend early morning trainings she was very reliable and worked hard for the BHS Netball programme. This year she also coached a U17s team passing on her knowledge.

JUNIOR MOST PROMISING - Milla Downing

EXCELLENCE IN NETBALL - Cathy Porter
Cathy is one of the hardest working players in the programme. Playing with fierceness and consistency since Year 9 this player has always made an impact and stood out. Just some of Cathy's accolades include MVP in Year 9 and Year 10 as well as U14 Canterbury Rep player and MVP both 2018 and 2019 seasons. Pulled into the SISS tournament as a development player in 2019, this player was then named in the SISS tournament team.

Known as the Cathanator… (or Cath Attack) for her ability to swiftly yet stealthily move around the court intercepting ball after ball, terrorising her opponents, her strong presence on court means she can be relied on to bring the ball safely through court linking on to her attackers. A very determined and talented player and athlete.

Season Reports

17A

The 2021 netball season for the U17A team has been a mixed bag. We had a bit of whiplash between winning all but one of our Saturday games and losing all but one of our Wednesday games. But every single game, win or loss, we had a blast - though especially if we won! Even if spirits were low, a clean shot or an epic intercept from anyone on the team boosted moral immediately and we all acted like the score was reset. We were all anticipating a win against STAC in the finals, but quarantine decided to spare them our wrath this year. All in all, we loved playing together as a team.

10A

Kia ora, our names are Natalie Livingstone and Milla Downing and we had the pleasure of being captain and co-captain of the 10A netball team. It was a great experience for not only us to grow as leaders but also got the chance to grow as a team as well. Our season has some ups and downs, of course we pulled through and became first in our section but none of this would have been made successful without our amazing coach Chontelle, without her pushing us to our limits and helping each of us reach our goals as individuals and as a team we wouldn’t have made it so successful as we have. Overall it was a great experience and so much fun playing alongside the girls throughout the season even though it came much quicker than we thought :) .

9A

Our names are Ebony McCall and Zoe Watson and we had the privilege to be captains for the Year 9A Netball team for 2021. Our season kicked off to a rocky start but by the end of the season we all gained new skills and have now improved our strengths. We would like to thank Brooke and Ms Smith for coaching us this season and always pushing us to be better players.

This season we participated in the Junior SISS tournament, Ashburton exchange, Wednesday and Saturday games. We enjoyed playing in these tournaments. Although we were tired and the scores were major setbacks we kept pushing for each other. A real boost of confidence was when we won our last three games at the SISS tournament. As the season went on we all formed friendships and became closer which improved the growth of the team.

During the beginning of the season we all adapted to coming to trainings and managing our time. In the course of a long team building session we discussed what goals we were going to set for ourselves, these involved commitment and perseverance.

On behalf of both of us we want to also thank the girls for all their hard work and contribution. We wouldn't be able to do any of it without them :).
