Genetics Expert Visits Year 13 Biology Students

Matthew Easterbrook —

Developing an understanding of selective breeding in the context of sheep was the intention of having Professor Jon Hickford, from Lincoln University, present to all Year 13 Biology students during Term 2. Professor Hickford is a leader in the field of selective breeding, particularly with sheep. He shared information about the history of human selective breeding of sheep from their origin to modern breeds. An emphasis on the implications of this on ecosystems, individual animals, populations and the evolution of sheep was discussed. This allowed students to develop their understanding of selective breeding, using sheep as a case study. Students will be using this information to help them development a report on genetic manipulation which is to be handed in next Term.
