Ultimate 2022

Sports Office —

Ultimate is a fast past Frisbee sport. The main objective is to catch the disc in the end-zone by passing the disc to progress up the pitch.

You cannot walk or run with the disc. Points are scored when the disc is caught inside the end-zone. If the disc hits the ground, regardless of who touches it last, the other team gain possession.

While it is relatively new to the secondary school sport scene, Ultimate is gaining in popularity across Canterbury and at Burnside High School, particularly with our younger students.

This year we had teams playing in both the Term 1 and Term 4 competitions. In Term 1 we had just one team entered  - a Junior Mixed team; by Term 4 this had grown to two teams - a Junior (Year 9 & 10) Boy's team and an Open Girl's team.

Due to the sport still being in a growth phase, it was difficult for the organisers to create a draw that allowed our teams to play teams of a similar age/skill level each week.  This did mean that our teams would sometimes be playing teams a lot older and more skilled that themselves but this didn't stop them from having a lot of fun. The more challenging games gave them an opportunity to learn alongside more experienced players and gain valuable tips that they will be able to take into future seasons.

The photo of the Term 4 Boy's team is from a very narrow win over Rolleston College, unfortunately Eunchan Lee missed the photo but word on the street is that he was a big part of the win.

We'd love to see Ultimate grow as a sport at Burnside High School, it is quick and easy to learn and suited to all sporting skill levels - come join us next year and see what all the buzz is about!
