NZSS Winter Tournament Week 2023

The New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Winter Tournament Week took place from Monday 28 August - Friday 01 September in various locations throughout New Zealand.

Congratulations to all our students who competed at Winter Tournament Week and a big thank you to all the staff, parents and members of the Burnside High School community who ensured that this week was so rewarding for all our young sportspeople.  

We would also like to say a big thank you, and acknowledge the support of the following foundations who financially supported the teams to attend Winter Tournament Week -

And a big shout to Caltex Avonhead who again provided fuel vouchers to assist the teams with travel costs - Thank you!

Golf
Jono Fry 10WRDS, Yuki Miya 13KJJ and Yash Naicker 12NLNC placed 3rd at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Golf Team Championships in Pleasant Point.

Table Tennis
A Burnside High School Mixed team competed in the NZSS Table Tennis Teams competition and also as Individuals, in Hamilton.

The Mixed team (Joshua Kim 12SBUC, Xavier Reid 9WHKR and Derrick Wong 10SCTH and Ellie Zhang 11NMSL) placed 5th overall. In the individual competition, Xavier placed 3rd in the U15 Boys Singles; and Ellie placed 4th in the U19 Girls Singles competition.

Ice Hockey
Our Burnside Combined team competed at the South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) Ice Hockey Championships in Dunedin. They placed 2nd in the B grade competition.

Rock Climbing
Three Teams competed in the SISS Rock Climbing Championships in Christchurch on Thursday 31 August and Friday 01 September, taking out 1st, 3rd and 4th in the Mixed competition.

Burnside 1 (George Darnbrough 11SBUC, Sue Petrie12SCSS, Frank Roberts 11SESM and Joran Le Quellec 13SRT) placed 1st in the Mixed Team grade, and finished up 2nd overall, very nearly beating the all boys team from Shirley Boys.

Equestrian
Two riders (Lil Ogano 12SBYS and Wendy Zhang 13BWJ) competed in the SISS Equestrian Championships held at Macleans Island, Christchurch.

Netball
The Senior Girls Netball A team were in Invercargill for 4 days competing in the A Grade of the SISS Netball Tournament.

Hockey
Our two 1st XI Hockey teams travelled to Nelson to compete in their respective tournaments.

The Boys 1st XI Hockey team placed 6th in the Johnson Cup and the Girls 1st XI Hockey team also placed 6th in the Audrey Timlin Memorial Cup.

Basketball
Three teams (Senior Boys, Senior Girls and the Junior A Boys) all played in SISS Tournaments in various locations throughout the South Island.

The Senior Boys team competed in the SISS AA Premierships in Dunedin. The boys finished up 14th out of 24 teams, a great effort from a team that is in a rebuild phase and was hit by injuries throughout the tournament.

The Senior Girls team competed at the SISS Southern Cup in Timaru. The girls placed 6th in this tournament. 

The Junior Boys A team also travelled to Dunedin to compete in the SISS Junior Premiership where they placed 7th in the A Grade competition.

Football
The Boys 1st XI Football team narrowly placed 6th in the Linwood Tournament in Blenheim. It took 18 penalties in the shootout to decide a winner in their play off match against Hillmorton, in the end Hillmorton edged them out 8 - 7.

The Girls 1st XI Football competed in the Gary Snowden Tournament in Blenheim, also placing 6th overall.

Fencing
A team of 9 from Burnside High School fenced at the NZSS Fencing Championships in Wellington. Our best placed female was Ayaka Kato 11NCTM who placed 7th, and the best placed male was Josh Carson who was 10th overall.
