Saving Laptops

Katana Dunn —

Recently Burnside High School got involved with a great programme that recycles laptops made redundant by industry. Recycle a Device was established in 2020 with the idea to refurbish old laptops for whānau in need.

On the last day of Term 2, a group of keen students got together to receive training from Owyn from Remojo Tech and Kayden from Christchurch Boys High school -  who is learning to be the trainer. This is an amazing endeavor where students learned to refurbish laptop so they can be redistributed in the community.

The next step here at Burnside High School is to organise weekly sessions so we start to really get into it. Most laptops will come from industry via Recycle a Device from companies such as Spark Foundation.

This is an initiative ticking all the boxes for sustainability and there are many ethical reasons why this is a good idea. Digital devices and connection to the Internet is vitally important for future education and this is a great way to help whānau in need and keep these devices off the rubbish heaps.
