Volleyball Girls Senior A

Burnside High School —

The Senior A Girls Volleyball team, coached by Sam Ryburn, had a successful season in Term 1, 2023.

Taking on some of the most promising teams in the country in the Monday night Canterbury Secondary Schools' League, the girls had many challenging games. With their theme of LIONS this year, the team played bravely and with pride for their school. The three major tournaments in Term 1 were the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Championships, Mainland Championships and the major event, New Zealand Secondary Schools' Championships.
The team set the bar for their upcoming tournaments at the Mainland Championships in March, finishing third after taking a 4-set win against Nelson Girls College. Later in March the team then faced off against local teams at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Championships placing fourth after a tough Bronze Medal battle against St Andrew's College. This secured the team a seed into the Top 32 teams for the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Championships.

In late March the team travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the biggest indoor sporting event in the country, the National Secondary Schools' Volleyball Championship. With a tough draw to start off the tournament, the girls fought their way into the Top 16, and after some long and hard matches, and having to work around an injury, the team finished 12th. At the conclusion of the tournament, Eliana Collins was named in the NZSSVC Girls Tournament Team. A great result to end the season and send off Coach Ryburn, who has given so much to the Burnside High Volleyball Programme.
