Year 13 Physical Education Climbing Trip

Kirsty Ogilvie —

Year 13PED had its first practical assessment opportunity in the middle of term one this year.

After spending a few weeks working on their climbing skills on our Hunter Gym rock wall, they then headed to Castle Hill to put their skills to the test on real rock. A few ABL games shook out the early morning cobwebs and got everyone warmed up and working together. It also distracted students from the impressive, if not a little scary sight of the YMCA staff rigging up ropes on some quite intimidating climbs! A belay briefing, equipment check and students were away. Climbs were graded based on difficulty and crowds gathered to support students as they strived to conquer each level.

After a long and activity-filled day, we then headed up Mt Cheeseman to our accommodation that evening. Mr Manners proved his magnificent chef skills yet again by whipping up some delicious burgers, before several intense card games of various descriptions kept everyone amused for the evening.

A good night’s sleep allowed a few early birds the chance to watch a stunning sunrise over the mountains, before we headed back to Christchurch to the YMCA to complete the last day of assessment opportunities there. Many students channelled their inner spider person and grabbed their excellence grades.
