Boys 1st XI Cricket
Gillette Cup Prelim Tournament
Congratulations to the BHS 1st XI Cricket team who competed at the Gillette 1st XI Cup Prelim Tournament at South Hagley Park, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 February.
This tournament was rescheduled from Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 February due to bad weather. Unfortunately the weather this week meant the second day of rescheduled play was also cancelled. Another win on the second day of play would have given the team an opportunity to progress further in the Gillette Cup. However the cancellation of the second day and the decision not to reschedule this day's play by Canterbury Metro Cricket meant that the one win (v Middleton Grange), one loss (v Shirley Boys High School) and one bye on the first day wasn't enough to progress us further in the tournament.
Thank you to John Davidson for the amazing photos.
Boys Cricket 1st XI vs Papanui High 1st XI
Thursday 19 October saw the 1st XI take on the Papanui High 1st XI in a spirited game of cricket - the first of what we hope will be many inter-school cricket games.
The two teams met at Burnside Park where BWUCC had very generously prepared the number 1 field for the match to take place. The conditions were ideal for cricket with just a light wind getting up in the afternoon.
Ben Hooker won the toss for Burnside and elected to bat first. A strong performance with the bat of 55 runs from Alfie Bell (55 runs) helped Burnside to a healthy total of 154 for 9 wickets off 40 overs.
Papanui High School chased hard and it looked like it could be anybody's game before Alex Guillemot (5 wickets for 12 runs off 7 overs) managed to secure their final wicket at 131 in the 35th over leaving Burnside High School victorious by 23 runs.
Many of the boys from both teams play their Saturday Cricket with the North West Youth Cricket (NWYC) club and we would like to thank them for their support in the lead up to and on the day. In particular, a big thanks goes to Zac Tait, the NWYC 2nd XI coach who umpired and supported the boys for the entire game. Thank you also to BWUCC for providing such a wonderful surface for the lads to play on.
Girls Cricket
Venus Cup
On Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 October, the BHS girls cricket team played in the regional Venus Cup tournament at Hagley Park. The girls had a fantastic time and were well supported by their parents over the two days. They loved it!
There were 12 teams competing and BHS ended up coming 6th. The winner of this tournament goes on to represent Christchurch at a National tournament.
Results:
Day 1 - Beat Rolleston and St Margaret's, lost to Christchurch Girls High School;
Day 2 - Beat Rangiora and lost to Cashmere (5th and 6th playoff).
We had some very good performances and our Year 9 and 10 girls coming through show a lot of promise for the future.
