SISS Junior Boys Basketball Tournament

Dilshan Muthunaidelage —

After two long years of cancelled events this year the Junior Boys Basketball team finally got to go to Nelson for the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Basketball Tournament.

The boys had a tough close first game against Garin College, but the boys fought hard to win the game 75-71. In our second game, we had Ashburton College and the boys played awesome winning the game 89-70. Our next two pool games were against Middleton Grange and John McGlashan College which we won 84 -47 and 94-56.

The team finished top of their pool, qualifying for the quarter finals. The boys had a strong win against Nayland College 100-43, proceeding into the semifinal against Grain College. The boys played their hearts out, leaving it all out there on the court, sadly we fell short of our expectations narrowly losing 78-80. We had our last game against John McGlashan for 4th/3rd place, which we won 91-39. The team finished 3rd overall in the A grade.

Some highlights include every single player scoring in every single game except the first game, playing spotlight and going swimming at Tahuna beach. All the boys can be very proud of their performance and have taken away from the trip some treasured memories that they will keep hold of for a long time to come.

A special thank you must go to our team manager Lesley McLachlan, coach Kenisha Bond, Basketball Coordinator Rozz Guillemot and all the parents for all the support they offered throughout the tournament.

The team would also like to thank their sponsors who helped them get to the tournament with their generous financial support - Mainland Furniture, Black Diamond Asphalt and The Lion Foundation.
