Hille Janssen, from Hanover in Germany, chose Burnside High School to enter as a mainstream international student because she was able to also spend time in the school’s International Rugby Programme. Aiming high, Hille was determined to improve her skills as a rugby player during her time in New Zealand, but knew that only a dedicated programme with specific skill sessions would make that possible.

Hille says, “I really enjoyed my involvement in the International Rugby Programme because it gave me the chance to train with very experienced and capable coaches and players. I have learned a huge amount in the last few months and have made friends with people from all over the world.”

Hille’s experience goes beyond Burnside High School to practicing with the champion University of Canterbury women’s team and being selected in the Canterbury Schoolgirl U18 representative team. She comments, “I think that the level of women's rugby in Christchurch is very high. The training sessions that I attend at school and at University of Canterbury are very well run. It is a lot of fun to play rugby at a higher level than is possible back home.”

The Burnside High School International Rugby Programme is now accepting applications for the 2018 season. The Programme runs for 22 weeks from 19 March to 19 August.
