Dear Students and Staff,
Welcome to our first online Yearbook. It is produced in a digital format using Hail. This enables us to use colour photographs and even video throughout the magazine and will make it easy for you to share the publication with friends and relations anywhere in the world. The new format was discussed with students and seen as the way forward to capture the school's year of events and many successes. Students were enthusiastic about the new format and were excited by the ability to add video to a Yearbook. This format also allows us to make it available to our former students and staff as part of our ongoing efforts to better engage with our alumni.
Year 13 students still receive their Leaver’s Book in hard copy.
This Yearbook provides a window through which we can see the highlights of 2017. It also provides a historical record of this point in our lives and, hopefully, will prompt happy memories of our time at Burnside High School.
I am constantly inspired by the young people in this school, by their talents and achievements in so many areas of endeavour: in academic work, in cultural activities, in the arts, in sport, and in leadership. Such a large and dynamic school has so many highlights that a single publication such as this cannot do them all justice. Therefore, this Yearbook records just a snapshot, but a very impressive snapshot, of what our students have achieved and what they have given back to this community. Thank you to all who have helped with the production of this Yearbook, so the rest of us can enjoy it.
The following comments are taken from my 2017 prize giving speech. I feel they convey my reflections on 2018 and the school’s 58th year. My aim is to always to be an effective leader and to build on the legacy of the six outstanding principals before me.
An important aspect of our role is to prepare the Burnside High School Campus for the next 10–20 years. This is an exciting prospect that comes with huge responsibilities. To plan for the future, we must understand the past. It is important to me that we hold fast to the things that make Burnside such a successful school, while being future-focussed in our planning.
We are making good progress on the first phase of the redevelopment of our campus; writing our Education Brief. This document outlines our vision for delivering education at BHS; including how property can support that vision. Essentially, the Education Brief, with input from all key stakeholders, outlines our vision for the future. It includes what learning spaces will look like, and the infrastructure that supports them. Spaces that offer flexibility will be a key factor in any design.
Once the brief is confirmed, hopefully by the end of term 1 next year, the design phase starts in earnest. First, the architect’s team will develop a concept plan for Ministry of Education-funded new buildings and structural alterations to existing buildings. Burnside High School has been allocated $19.1 million to develop our facilities: in particular to address weather tightness issues in some of our new buildings, repair earthquake damage, and to upgrade and modernise our learning spaces. This work is scheduled to begin in 2020.
This year we were reviewed by the Education Review Office; and I am pleased to say they gave us an excellent report and stated that ‘the school is very well placed to sustain and improve its performance’.
The report concluded with this statement:
Students at Burnside High School learn and develop within an inclusive, values-based learning environment. The school fosters and very effectively supports ‘personal excellence and care for others’. High quality leadership is committed to supporting staff, students and their parents and whānau to feel respected, connected and motivated to achieve success for students.
Students enjoy the extensive range of opportunities they have to succeed and excel.’
I believe the school is in good heart and is ready, willing and open to adapt to the challenges presented by life in the 21st century.
I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has served the school so faithfully this year. Thank you students, and parents/caregivers, for your commitment to the educational goals that the staff work so hard to promote. Education is a partnership, and I am thankful that the school-home partnership is such a strong one in our community. I am especially grateful to those parents who work on the Board of Trustees, PTA, and whanau. The members of these groups seek to forge an environment which promotes and prepares students for learning. My sincere thanks go to the staff for your belief in the school and your dedication to your teaching. A skilled teacher is the best educational advantage that can be given to students and Burnside High School’s students are fortunate indeed with the fine team of teaching staff we have. Thank you also to our support staff who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to ensure that our school runs smoothly and that staff and students are supported in their teaching and learning.
To those returning next year I look forward to seeing you back in February, refreshed and ready to tackle another year of opportunities and challenges.
I pay special tribute to those who are leaving school. Our school motto — Recte sic dirige cursum — Along this path direct your journey correctly — reinforces the historical significance of the cabbage trees. They are a landmark in the local landscape and have been used for centuries as a guiding point. I hope you feel you have been guided through Burnside High School - that you have attained the qualifications you were capable of and that you needed, and that you developed the personal qualities and confidence to choose the right pathways in life. I hope you will remember with pride and affection the security, support, shelter, and strength of your ‘cabbage tree’ years. To you all I extend my very best wishes for the future.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the 2017 year at Burnside High School, and has made it such a successful one.
I feel very privileged to serve as Principal.
