In March when we went into lockdown our German classes all went online.
We did zoom calls and had to work around doing all our work online. After lockdown Year 9 & 10 German students got to go and watch a German film on the 10 of September at the Lumière Cinema during the German Film Festival.
Many enjoyed yummy Brezen, Frankfurter and Amerikaner at the annual Mardi Gras Languages cultural food festival courtesy of Café Berlin.
Later on in the year some students learning German got to choose if they wanted to take the German A1, A2 and B1 exams sponsored by the Goethe-Institut. Bravo to those students who successfully passed these European Framework exams!
In August the Year 10 German students were meant to compete in the regional OSKAR German quiz. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 those students couldn’t go and this quiz had to be postponed to November. Year 9-11 German students competed in the OSKAR quiz with the Year 9 team placed second and the Year 10 team came fourth. Participants at the quiz had fun singing karaoke style German Schlager such as “Atemlos durch die Nacht” and “Es geht mir gut”.
Alex Yang, Katherine Sun, and Kseniia Vasylesvka have won the Year 12 German PASCH scholarship for 2020. These students will be going to the Goethe-Institut in Wellington in January, because of covid-19 the students will be doing a virtual online trip to Germany. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Congratulations to those students who won!
