2023 NZSS Summer Tournament Week

Our Volleyballers, Golfers, Rowers, Waterpolo Players, Triathletes, and Mountain Bikers were all footing it against the best teams in New Zealand and the South Island as part of Summer Tournament Week, Monday 27 April - Friday 31 April.

Congratulations to all our students who took part in the biggest event on the secondary school summer sporting calendar.

Thank you to all our parents, caregivers, teachers and staff members for supporting these teams and students as they travelled around the country to compete in the sports they love. We are so very lucky to have such a wonderful team of supporters.

NZSS VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Mon 27 - Fri 31 March)

After the disappointment of last year's NZSS Volleyball Championships being the cancelled due to Covid, it was really exciting to have four of our Senior Volleyball teams to head away to Palmerston North to compete against the best secondary school teams in New Zealand.

The Boys Senior A Team placed 6th in Division 1, this is the highest ever placing from a BHS Boys team at these championships. The Girls Senior A Team came 12th in Division 1, with the Girls Senior B team coming 12th in Division 3. The Boys Senior B Team ended up 28th in Division 3

Congratulations to Jova Waqa 13OGK and Eliana Collins 12SKWE who were selected in the NZSS Volleyball Championships Tournament team.

NZSS ROWING REGATTA - MAADI CUP

(Mon 27 March - Sat 01 April)

This year's Maadi Cup was held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge. After a close brush with covid, a squad of 19 BHS rowers were able to make a splash at Maadi. Our squad achieved a number of B finals and a large number of personal bests. No small achievement in an event that attracted 2,300 secondary school rowers from across New Zealand.

Some notable placings from the squad were:

  • Girls U15 Double - Mila Wood 11STRR and Jessica Rankin 11WTNH came 1st in the B final which placed them 9th overall and was also a personal best.
  • Girls U16 Double - Poppy Knight 12SBDW and Liv Moriarty 11STRR came 6th in their B final placing them 14th overall.
  • Girls U17 Double - Sam Rankin 13PZS and Katy Mitchell 13KNC came 4th in their B placing them 12th overall.

Congratulations to Ben Lough 9SOSC who was third at the NZSS Triathlon Championships in Wanaka on the way to Invercargill for the SISS Athletics Champs, and then did us proud in the Under 14 1500m and 3000m. Ben was also 3rd in the SISS Triathlon Championships held in Oamaru earlier this month.

SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS (SISS) WATER POLO

(Thurs 30 March - Sun 02 April)

This tournament was played here in Christchurch at the QE II Tairoa and Jellie Park complexes. Our Senior Boys A team competed well against some very strong teams from around the South Island, ultimately coming 7th overall. Thank you to Rebekah Inwood for all the amazing photos.

SISS MOUNTAIN BIKING

(Wed 29 March - Sat 01 April)

The start of Summer Tournament Week saw a significant southerly weather event hit the South Island and Coronet Peak which put the SISS Mountain Biking Championships on 'ice' for a couple of days while things thawed out. Once the riding the could get underway our bikers had a blast, achieving some good results.

  • Dylan Patchett 9WPPK - U15 Boys Enduro 18th & U15 Boys Downhill 31st.
  • Torin Rothery 10WDNK - U16 Boys Downhill 16th.
  • Jacob Tschudin 10WWTA - U16 Boys Downhill 27th.

CANTERBURY SECONDARY SCHOOLS' GOLF TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Monday 27 March)

This competition was held in perfect conditions at the Templeton Golf Course, Christchurch. All three of our teams competed strongly with the A team placing 2nd. This placing means that we automatically qualify to compete at the NZ Secondary Schools' Teams Final. The NZSS Championships will be held on the Monday of Winter Tournament Week, at the Pleasant Point Golf Club.
