Nick Atkins retires from the Bench
A farewell function in the Ministry of Justice building was held on 31 March to thank Nick Atkins for his service as a Judicial JP
The function was attended by a large number of court staff who had worked with Nick over the years, lawyers, Canterbury JP Assn Registrar Ken Shields and members of the Judicial JP panel.
Nick has served 21 years as a Judicial JP and fulfilled many roles in this time, including mentor, scheduler and trainer. His quick thinking, wit and humour made working with him a pleasure.
Lately, Nick has been focusing on the Bail court but previously heard deposition hearings, until these were abolished by the Ministry of Justice. These hearings could last anywhere from one day to three weeks.
Nick kindly agreed to have his tenure extended beyond the mandatory retirement age when the panel needed him and for this, we especially thank him.
Nick, thank you for the many years you have put into this voluntary role. You will be missed and we wish you all the very best for the future.
