President BJ Clark's Report

BJ Clark —

I would first like to acknowledge all Justices of the Peace who volunteer to serve the public without any expectation of reward. The role of a Justice of the Peace can be very time consuming, something that the public do not often see.

Not only do they invite people into their homes to carry out the service but many also volunteer at Service Desks, on the Bail Bonds Panels, Nominated Persons Panel, Community Justice Panels and some go on to serve in the courts as Judicial Justices. So thank you all and keep up the great work.

Centenary Luncheon

Thank you to Yvonne and her team for the wonderful function to celebrate 100 years since the forming of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association. I am fully aware that it takes a lot of planning and a great team to plan these events and it was certainly an enjoyable occasion.

I must also acknowledge in particular the attendance of our National President, Rachael O’Grady, the Council representatives, our two Life Members, other special guests and of course the support of our members and partners.

The presentation on the history of the Justice of the Peace was excellent and very informative.

Extra General Meeting

An Extra General Meeting was held on Saturday the 7th of July to put forward a rule change in regard to the nomination of Life Membership of the Canterbury Justice of the Peace Association. The rule was designed to streamline the process and was accepted in principle with a slight change. Thank you to all who attended and the discussion and support for the rule change was very helpful.

Our Council

On your behalf I would like to make mention of your elected representatives, the Council. They carry out their roles as Councillors over and above their Justice of the Peace role and they do it with great passion. Much of their work is unseen and unrecognised so from me, I thank you.

Education

It is great to see the numbers attending the Education training sessions. It is extremely important that we keep up to date with any changes and continue to revise our processes to ensure we provide an effective and efficient service for the public.

Regards

BJ Clark
