From Our Service Desks

Gwen Mitchell —

“Woo hoo! What a fantastic introduction to Service Desk work. The library staff were so welcoming……..I had an awesome experience”

We have 172 JPs working on our Service Desks  with 143 Accredited Justices, and 29 not accredited.  This equates to roughly 20%,  not accredited.  We are working hard to have everyone accredited recognising that keeping up with our education is important.  Clients using our Service Desks can feel confident that our Justices are up to date offering a professional service.

Our Fendalton Service Desk Justices have been on the move.  First we moved to Papanui library, working Saturdays’ while Fendalton library was closed.   Construction work at Papanui library then meant a shift to Bishopdale library.    The Fendalton Service Desk team are still at Bishopdale working on Saturdays whilst our Bishopdale team work Wednesdays.  The Fendalton team are expecting to return to Fendalton at the beginning of August.  Sincere thanks to our “ Nomad” team at Fendalton who have all had a “can do” attitude.

The Saturday desks are very popular. We are looking to continue a Saturday service desk at Fendalton library in lieu of the Tuesday desk there.   In a perfect world we would continue Tuesdays and have Saturday as well, but I haven’t quite enough Justices currently available to make this work.  We roster two Justices on for Saturday work as we are dealing with forty or so clients.

We have three new Service Desk Coordinators.  Stan Hackwell has stepped down from coordinating our Rangiora service desk and Neil Falconer has kindly agreed to replace him.  William Lambie has stepped down from coordinating our Papanui Service Desk and Bronwyn Welsh has taken this role over.  Lance Kenyon has taken over permanently coordinating our Sumner desk.

We thank Stan and William sincerely for all their help and welcome and thank Neil, Bronwyn and Lance for taking on the Coordinator roles.

So what does a Service Desk Coordinator do?
The Coordinator organises the roster for their desks taking into account a lot of JPs have a variety of commitments and take holidays each year.  They are the first point of contact for their team, for the library they work in, and for me if I have a question relating to the desk.  Some of our Coordinators organise a coffee catch up every now and then, which everyone enjoys. Each month I ask the Coordinator for the statistics for their desks and ask for any comments from their team.  I pass these onto our Canterbury JP Council.

We have seventeen fabulous Coordinators. They are:

Service Desk Statistics
Attached is the latest spreadsheet produced by Neville Brown who collates all the figures from our Service Desks. You will see from 1st September 2018 to the 31st May 2019 Justices working on our desks have provided 1,775 hours of service and have seen 12,594 clients. They have handled 30,367 certified copies, dealt with 5,568 Statutory Declarations , 462 Affidavits and handled 1,537 other documents.      Impressive statistics showing that a large number of clients’ prefer to visit a Justice of the Peace working on a Service Desk in a neutral, warm, secure environment.
Once you have downloaded the file you can open  and zoom in to check it out in more detail.

From these stats you will understand why we are always looking for Justices to join our teams so please contact Gwen Mitchell 0274 589178 or one of our Coordinators listed above for a chat if you could help on the Service Desk rosters.  We ask that you are accredited or willing to work to be accredited and we will support you to do this.

If you are a newly sworn in Justice we can organise for you to sit in with an experienced Justice before you begin work on a Service Desk.   We can guarantee that you will handle a variety of work using all the skills you have acquired on your journey to becoming a Justice of the Peace.
