Learning to stop institutional racism in our school communities

Sandy Hastings —

This is an important hui being offered by NZEI next year - it is limited to 37 participants, so register now to be part of this mahi...

In late March and early April next year, NZEI Te Riu Roa will run a series of workshops throughout New Zealand to equip principals to work with their staff and communities to stop institutional racism. These are re-scheduled from the ones planned for earlier this year that were affected by Covid-19.

The nine workshops are each for 1.5 days and are funded by the Principals’ Professional Development Fund, which was negotiated in collective agreement negotiations between NZEI Te Riu Roa and the Ministry of Education. The workshops are open to all principals - as leaders of their schools to lead this important mahi. The fund will pay for course fees, catering and travel and accommodation (if necessary). Wherever possible, we ask that people go to their nearest hui, in line with climate change policies and also in order to network locally.

If there are local lockdowns in any areas, we will look at delivering online on the same days, rather than postponing again. You can register here. The workshops will each be capped at 37 principals – so it is first come, first served.

The workshops this year are led by STIR – Stop Institutional Racism – and focus on examining our own personal views using storytelling while learning strategies on how to move things forward.

The new date and location for 2022 is:

  • Christchurch - March 31-April 1 - Heartland Hotel Cotswold (Papanui Road)
