Kids Should not have their own Devices in their Room!

Nathan Bagge —

Some kids have tv's or computers in their rooms and others don't. Is it good to have a tv in your room? I strongly believe that it isn't and should not be allowed. In this piece of writing I will explain why we should not let kids have computers in their rooms.

To begin with they would stay inside watching tv instead of going outside to play. A study in America shows that 70 percent of third graders (year 4) have a tv in their room. In another study, kids have at least nine hours extra screen time a week, from twenty one hours to thirty, when they have a tv put in their room. Research shows that having a tv in a bedroom will cause mental and physical illness, along with education problems.

Secondly, they would stay up all night watching or playing games without permission from an adult. Therefore they would be grumpy, tired and half asleep for the rest of the day, which will definitely affect their ability to exercise and do schoolwork. Kids with tvs in their rooms are far more likely to have sleep problems. In an article on Stuff, a Southland principal says that late night gaming of students has been “affecting their schooling” (Article: Stuff, June 17 2018, late night gaming affecting students’ schooling). He has been backed by an internet safety expert, John Parsons, who said that late night sleeping was something he was seeing commonly among schools. The principal, Gerry Ward, did not want the students to stop gaming, just to not do it for as long and get more sleep.

Finally, They could look at inappropriate videos, games, channels, shows and websites while no one is in the room. An example of an inappropriate game is one that is too violent or has an age rating 16+. People who make games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto, make them to be as addicting as possible so people will play them for longer. It is okay for kids to play appropriate games on a computer in a lounge where adults can supervise, as long as they do not play it for any longer than about an hour a day and do not play just before bed.

This is why kids should not have their own devices in their bedrooms. It is easy to see it affects the child's health and learning too much.
