Year 6 Camp to Waihola
On Wednesday amongst the drizzle our 40 Year 6 children made their way to Waihola for their camp.
We adjusted the timetable because of the weather so none of the activities were missed. Matua Tim started us off with a look at Māori history in the area and used Google Earth to help explain it.
When we got to camp the children helped unload the vehicles and were put into their bunk rooms. Once the camp rules were explained we started our first activity which was Geocaching. This is when you go on a hunt for hidden containers with codes in them. You use a device linked to satellites to help find where to go. This was lots of fun but also challenging as the terrain was very steep in places.
On Thursday after breakfast we got ready for our rotations... we had Archery, Frisbee Golf, Confidence Course and Flying Fox. Each group of 10 rotated through the activities. The children dug deep to complete these activities and had lots of success overcoming the challenges. After lunch it was time for the Water Slide, this was exhilarating to watch let alone actually be doing.
We had some free time late afternoon and played football, Ga-ga ball, basketball shots or just listened to music. After tea and sharing time we got ready for Spot Light, this was played across the road in a fenced off arena. Once again we had lots of fun doing this.
On our last day we cleaned up and completed some team building activities, these tested our resilience and of course teamwork. The teachers said we did really well on these activities. We then had some lunch and packed up our gear to go to Taieri Mouth to do part of the Millennium Walk. We then had about half an hour at the park area to find some crabs to pick up, this was a fun way to finish our camp. Thanks to all the staff who helped make this happen.
