Trams and Trains

Rūma Kākāpō goes on a trip

On Thursday of week 7 Rūma Kākāpō went on a trip as part of their inquiry this term. Our inquiry focus is Tūrangawaewae. We started the term by looking at how to read maps and understand our city and country on a map. We've also been learning pūrākau about our local area from Matua Tim.

To finish off our inquiry we started to look at the history of transport in Dunedin. We started by looking at cable cars and trams before learning about trains and the railway station.

To learn more and get some first-hand knowledge on the topic, we left the class for a day of exploring.

Our first stop was at Mornington where we saw the old building where the cable cars used to stay at night. We had morning tea at the park before walking down some of High Street - the street the cable cars used to climb.

Our next stop was at Toitū Museum. We got a close-up look at some trams and a trolley bus.

We had lunch in the sun on the lawn outside the railway station before exploring around the station. We were lucky enough to see a train pull in and leave again. The kids raced the train down the platform as it sped off.
