Matariki Food Technology
Our theme for STEAM this term is food sustainability living with inflated living costs.
The Year 7 and 8 students this term have been learning about how to be more sustainable with our food, learning about the cost of food and how to make our food go further and last longer.
This week as a part of our Matariki celebration Ronnie, Nasir and the team at time for lunch, gave up their time to come in and give our year 7 and 8 students an invaluable cooking experience.
Our students cooked 3 meals on three different days for the whole school as apart of our Matariki celebration. The four of the stars in the Matariki constellation are connected to food; Tupuānuku – this star is related to food grown in the ground, Tupuārangi – food which comes from the sky and trees, Waitī – from rivers, streams and lakes, and Waitā – from the sea.
On Monday Pohutukawa created a burger, making the patties from scratch, producing a salad for the burger and finishing with a Mango Lassi which was a highlight for many students trying it for the first time ever.
On Tuesday Rimu created a Chicken sandwich, creating a production line and understanding the steps needed to create so many sandwiches at once, they made a delicious salad to go inside and also created yoghurt and fruit desert.
On Wednesday our Matariki celebration day, Rata finished with creating a 'Matariki soup' using vegetables from the school garden, creating meatballs from scratch and learning about the steps that were required to develop a soup was great way to share and celebrate the special day with the rest of the school.
We are so Proud of our students for the effort they have put into their cooking this week. A lot of team work, communication and critical thinking was witnessed this week.
A huge Thank you to Ronny, Nasir and the team at Time 4 Lunch for their efforts this week. We are so lucky to have Time 4 Lunch to provide us with such healthy lunches for our students.
