What's been happening in Yr 5/6??
It's been a full filled term in Term One... Find out more!!
PEKAPEKA
Ruma Pekapeka has really enjoyed learning about animal Migration. We have looked in depth at the amazing journey the godwit makes annually and each student has explored their own animal that migrates.
We also visited the Otago Museum and looked at the variety of animals that migrate and the adaptations they have made in order to survive.
During the past two weeks we have run water safety skills lessons for the Year 5/6 students in our school pool. They have learned how to signal for help, practiced different float techniques, experienced wearing a life jacket in the water, demonstrated ways in which to rescue someone in difficulty and other activities. We also have been practicing our swimming skills. We have continued to enjoy learning Maths using the Numicon materials and look forward to more of this in Term 2.
Have a safe Easter break everyone.
KEKENO
Rūma Kekeno Take on Water Like Seals!
Taking after their class name, Rūma Kekeno have been taking to the water like legends. In the classroom we have been learning about rips and hazards in and around the water. When getting to the pool, we have been putting this knowledge into action (as well as a few handstand competitions). Last Wednesday, we also made a new friend hopping around the pool – Timmy!
We have been incorporating our topic this term, Migration, into our literacy programme. We have been reading plenty of books and articles about animals that migrate, as well as doing art, and writing our own formal reports on our favourite migrating animal. Here are some photos of some of our art and report writing!
Some more attached below...
We have also been very fortunate to welcome a new student teacher to our class from the University of Canterbury, Miss Wang. She has been a great addition to Rūma Kekeno, and we look forward to having her teaching next term!
Have a safe and happy holiday break,
From Rūma Kekeno.
WHEKE
The children have settled into the routines expected in Ruma Wheke.
Confidence has increased with the class, this is evident in the increased participation in children sharing their work and speaking in front of the class. We have worked hard on developing a supportive environment to help foster this.
The class enjoyed our trip to the Otago Museum to learn more about animal adaptations that have helped species survive. During class the children have looked at animal migration and presented these to each other.
Covid has certainly hit Wheke quite hard and we have not had a full class for quite some time. Happy Easter to all of you. See you next Term.
