Kākano Parent App Trial

Tōtaranui Kāhui Ako —

Kia ora, welcome to Kākano!

Kākano is an app which is being created to help Canterbury children overcome BIG emotions like anger and worries or anxiety.

Kākano is a website designed to support positive relationships within a family/whānau and provide parents with engaging information and skills to support and enhance their parenting.

Kākano means ‘seed’. Week by week Kākano supports whānau to grow a strength such as kindness, fun or gratitude. It also offers a range of on-the-spot advice for times when things are challenging.

Kākano draws on the best evidence available to help parents support their children and manage stressors and emotions in positive ways.

The project has been funded by some very kind Accor Hotel staff here in Canterbury through CureKids. CureKids selected Auckland University and Canterbury District Health Board as collaborative partners on this project and have since designed Kākano alongside Canterbury parents. We have successfully tested Kākano with Christchurch parents and their families, and are now ready to begin a full trial.

The Kākano team are currently working with Mana Ake Kaimahi and 26 Christchurch schools in which they work, to begin this full trial of Kākano alongside 300 families and whānau.

This term Tōtaranui Kāhui Ako schools have been given the opportunity for their parents to be involved.

We are looking for parents who want to learn more about parenting and how to support their tamariki to cope with 'big' emotions.
