Whatukura Camp Wainui 2023

Trina Wilkinson —

Sun, sea and sand were three of the main parts that are highlights for Whatukura who went to camp in Week 4.

After a couple of weeks preparing for our school camp the day finally came and Room 11 and 12 (Whatukura) set off on their way to Wainui.

A trek into camp where the weather gods weren't shining so kindly on us, was completed before we headed into Powell Village to spend three nights and four days at Wainui to bond as a class, challenge ourselves and enjoy some quality time with each other and our teachers.

Three main activities were on offer: Costeering, Kayaking and the Giant Swing. Each of the activities came with its challenges, whether it was facing a fear of heights, a fear of seaweed or a fear of being out in the open ocean. Every student in Whatukura persevered and enjoyed one if not all of the activities.

Co-existing in a bunk room at times was one of the most stressful parts of being at camp, but our class learnt to get along and also the importance of keeping our doors shut as well as our rooms tidy!

We were really lucky with the weather and spent every day after our activities either fishing at Tikao Bay, jumping off the wharf in Wainui or even swimming out to the pontoon at Wainui Beach. Lots of our class enjoyed fossicking around the rocks finding crabs and interesting shells.

A few highlights we all agreed on was how good the food was, how chill the atmosphere was, how being prepared and ready for the day was really important and how lucky we are to have such an awesome class.

Our camp wouldn't have gone ahead without Miss Rennie's awesome organisation and planning, our fantastic whānau support who came to camp and stayed or transported. Or for some lucky parents - both!

Camp Wainui will definitely be something we remember for a long time to come.
