Board Shorts: Principal Appointment

Admin Cashmere —

Kia ora koutou katoa

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent survey in relation to appointing a new Principal. It was great to see so many responses.

From the survey we’ve put together a word cloud summary of what our community and staff told us they value in a leader – see photo. We will be providing this summary to candidates to assist them with their applications. The Board of Trustees will also consider your detailed responses as part of the appointment process.

Last week, Associate Principal Phil Rodley facilitated a session with a group of our senior students to find out what attributes / qualities they think are important for our new Principal to have – see below. This information will also be provided to candidates to assist them with their applications and considered by the Board of Trustees as part of the appointment process.

Student feedback:

  • Kind (not bossy!), smily and caring
  • Bit of a sense of humour
  • Someone who makes the kids, staff and parents feel welcome and safe and comfortable, open and genuine
  • Looks smart and shows good manners
  • Lives our school vision and values
  • Is proud of the kids, the teachers and our school
  • Active and collaborative - working together with kids and staff
  • Seen around the school talking to everyone and asking them how they are doing
  • Gives and accepts good feedback
  • Involved in school activities eg. sports, trips, assemblies, etc
  • They love it when the Principal is out and about at break times or in classrooms seeing their learning
  • Knowledgeable and well informed eg. with Covid etc., and know what’s going on around the school
  • Creative and with lots of good ideas for how to improve the school
  • Ensuring all kids get opportunities to be involved in extra things

We will be advertising the Principal position on the Education Gazette later this week, with interviews anticipated to take place in October.

Thank you again for your input.

Ngā mihi,

David Miller, Board Chair
