Year 13

Cashmere High School —

Kia ora koutou katoa,

Term 1 was jam packed with many different things - settling into classes, changing classes, school trips, summer tournament week, first assessments… On the whole, the Year 13 cohort are juggling their various tasks and challenges with energy and dedication and it has been wonderful to hear such positive feedback on their start to 2024. This feedback has not only been regarding academics, but I have had numerous comments about the way the Year 13s are conducting themselves as leaders. Our peer leading programme has been incredibly successful this year and those involved have had a huge impact on the new Year 9 cohort. Thanks must go to Mr John Ussher for his guidance of the peer leaders and for driving this programme. The group will hopefully continue building on these relationships throughout the year. I have also had lovely reports from the work being done across faculties by our prefects. Many have been spending time working with younger year groups and offering their support during tutorials. This reciprocal relationship allows both parties to learn and I am proud of our Year 13 students who have stepped up as mentors. Ma te tuakana ka totika te teina, ma te teina ka totika te tuakana!

Now that all students are settled in their correct subjects, the reality of NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance is starting to set in. This information may be useful to go over together to ensure students are on track to achieve their goals this year. If you have any questions regarding Level 3 or UE, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

At our recent assemblies we have celebrated successes in track cycling, rowing, basketball, volleyball and mountain biking. Students have also received awards for their service to the school or for their excellent work ethic demonstrated in the classroom. Congratulations to everyone who has participated in events or competitions, regardless of results. It is great to see so many of you making the most of your final year at CHS. Special mention must go to our COVE award winners for Term 1 - Molly Callaghan and Jasmine Cox. Both students have been recognised for their hardworking, kind nature and also their commitment to service in and outside of school.

Our House Captains have been busy with multiple house events already and they have all been outstanding leaders so far. I was also impressed with the whole year group on Athletics Day in Term 1. So many students were participating in events, enjoying being with friends, encouraging younger students and simply embracing the true spirit of the day. Congratulations to our Athletics Day Senior Champions - Jacob Ridder and Leah Pratten!

Overall, Term 1 has been very positive and I am proud of the way the class of 2024 have started the year. Term 2 will again be a busy time with winter sport beginning, our major production Oliver! and of course the academic demands of Level 3 that need to remain at the forefront of our students’ minds. As always, I am here to support however I can so please get in touch if you have any concerns.

Ngā mihi,
