Future Problem Solvers - World Championships

Our incredible Future Problem Solving Team is currently in the United States for the Future Problem Solving World Finals at Indiana University. We have just learnt they have achieved outstanding success!

So far on their travels they have attended a lecture hosted by professors from Columbia University, visited a young New Zealander studying at Princeton, had pizza with an ex-student who works at Microsoft, went to the United Nations, visited the UN New Zealand Mission, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, met a Kiwi musician studying at Juilliard, and savoured ice cream while watching the sunset over the magnificent Manhattan skyline. A great opportunity for all of them!

The latest results are:

  • William Dyhrberg 1st in the World for Senior Multi Affiliate Problem Solving

  • Moss Turner 2nd in the World for Senior Scenario Writing

  • Abby Laird 3rd in the World for Senior Multi Affiliate Problem Solving

  • Naomi Wilson 6th in the World for Senior Scenario Writing

Further Cashmere results are pending.

Manu Kōrero

Tihei Mauri ora! Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the annual Manu Kōrero speech competition. We had two speakers involved, Kahutaiki Calman and Mānuera Riwai-Couch, supported by our whānau class. Both Kahutaiki and Mānuera spoke incredibly well, and did their whānau, school and community proud. Ko Te iringa o Kahukura ko te korowai mātauraka ō tātou tīpuna.

Jazz Night

Recently we had our annual Jazz Night concert. We have more combos, big bands, and ensembles than ever before with close to 100 students performing and running tech for an amazing night of swing, funk and latin jazz tunes.

A big thank you to Papanui High School for joining us with some incredible performances from both the Big Band and Combo.

Who’s Who at Cashmere High School - Louise Whitehead

Staff: Louise Whitehead (International Department) — Image by: Cashmere High School

Kia ora, my name is Louise and I have been part of the International Department Team as the Homestay Coordinator since the start of 2023. Before starting here, I had previously worked in another CHCH school and tried my hand at real-estate before returning to the educational sector once again. After applying for a different position here at CHS, I was sought to join the International Team. As the Homestay Coordinator I am responsible for assessing and completing student homestay placements and helping both students and host families with issues that arise during their stay. Due to Covid and the affect it had on the community at large, we had a significant decrease in homestay families as did many other schools across the country. Coming into a demanding new role certainly was a challenge. It is not a nine to five role, but I enjoy what I do and have the support of my team. We are always looking for homestay families, whether this is short term, holiday, half year, or long term.

If anyone out there would be interested in finding out more about becoming a host family, please email me on the following email: homestay@cashmere.school.nz I look forward to hearing from you.
