Welcome Aboard – A New Journey Begins
Welcome Aboard – A New Journey Begins at Cashmere High School
As we begin the new academic year, I want to extend a warm welcome to our Year 9 students, their families, and new staff members joining us at Cashmere High School – Te iringa o Kahukura. It’s an exciting time, and I’m thrilled to see so many new faces embarking on this journey with us.
Our school crest features a Lymphad—a sailing vessel powered by both oars and sails. The oars represent hard work and discipline, while the sails symbolise the support from teachers, peers, and the wider school community. As Year 9s, you are our newest crew members—learning the ropes, establishing routines, and becoming part of our whānau. The sooner you embrace good habits, the more you’ll thrive here.
Year 9 Pōwhiri & the Year 9 Journey
I know moving into high school can feel daunting, but it’s also an incredible time for growth and self-discovery. Many of you are coming from smaller schools where you felt comfortable. Now, you’ll face new experiences, meet new friends, and take on new challenges.
Our Head of School for Year 9, Ms. Victoria Minehan, shared some wise words to guide you on your journey: "High school is about finding balance. It’s about learning how to manage your time, pursue your passions, and build strong relationships. It’s about working hard, celebrating successes, and learning from mistakes."
She also encouraged you to get involved: "‘E rere te huata, kapohia!’ – ‘When the spear flies, grab it!’ The biggest regrets often come from opportunities not taken. Push yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and say ‘yes.’ Many of your best memories will come from the activities and friendships you make here."
We have an incredible team of teachers and peer leaders here to support you. Whatever you’re feeling—excitement, nerves, curiosity—know that you’re not alone. Look after each other, be kind, and make the most of every moment.
Year 10-13 Looking Ahead
Year 10 had a great start on Friday, settling into their new timetables and reconnecting with their form teachers. We’re also excited to welcome back our Year 11–13 students on Monday, starting class after the 8.40am bell. With everyone ready to explore new spaces, make new friends, and embrace fresh challenges, I know this will be a fantastic year for us all.
