Careers Team Update

Cashmere High School —

TERTIARY PRESENTATIONS & EVENTS

During Term 2 we had presentations from the last of the universities, providing students with plenty of information about what they have to offer.  These talks have been a great introduction to what each provider has to offer students heading off to university. There are more university open days coming up during Term 3 so keep an eye out.

Students participated in a number of events this term including UC Discovery Day, Girls with Hi Vis, UC Aukaha Tau 12, Otago Open Days, Otago DARE Day.

CAREER SESSIONS

Every year we deliver Career sessions to all year groups. The Year 12 sessions are underway during Term 3. With Year 9 sessions starting later in the term & rolling on into term 4. These are a great start to get students thinking about future pathways or help with ongoing planning and choices during their school years.

WORK EXPERIENCE

A number of work experience opportunities took place. With the help of local businesses, we are able to offer these opportunities to our students and are always looking for other opportunities to support our students.

During Term 2 we had Cait Bruce at Hoon Hay School, Henry Lovegrove at Flockhill Station & Will Taylor at Denis Cunningham Ltd. These students all had their work experience opportunity to gain some real-life insight on their future careers.

There was also a group of ECE students placed at various ECE centres in our community to gain on the job experience.

Students also got to experience tours of business across different industries to give them a taste of their future pathway options. We’d like to thank Davin Industries and Sonter Automotive for allowing these tours to take place.

CAREER EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

During the term many students signed up to the ARA Taster experiences, which range from Art & Design, Medical Imaging, Introduction to Nursing to Plumber/Welder/Painter for a day, Tech Girls, NZ Broadcasting School and more!  These experiences are all about giving students a feel for tertiary-level study with hands-on taster programmes.

Our Comprehensive First Aid Course took place during the July holidays. This will be run again during the October school holidays as well as a Defensive Driving course. These courses are a regular on the school calendar and great way for students to gain important life skills and also earn course credits.
