Being Aspirational – Lessons from Melbourne

Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Cashmere High School – Te iringa o Kahukura.

This week I had the opportunity to visit a number of top-performing state co-educational schools in Melbourne, alongside 45 other school leaders from Canterbury and the West Coast. Each of these schools had its own strengths, but a shared feature was their clear commitment to excellence in learning, culture and continuous improvement.

One message that stood out was the importance of being aspirational and supporting students to aim high, to stretch themselves, and to understand that growth is always possible. There was also thoughtful focus on students who may be “cruising” — doing well enough, but not necessarily being challenged or fully engaged. It was a helpful reminder to keep reflecting on how we can help every student reach their potential while also feeling supported and motivated.

At Cashmere, we don’t claim to have it all figured out, but we are proud of our culture of ongoing improvement. Each year, we work to raise the bar in ways that feel meaningful across academics, sport, the arts & culture and service. These areas help our students grow as individuals and contribute in ways that matter.

There’s value in continuing to reflect, refine and learn, from others and from ourselves. That’s what keeps education purposeful and engaging, not just for our students but for our whole school community.

We have five more days until term break. A big thank you to the staff for all their hard work for our students.

Working Together for Student Success

Building strong partnerships between school and home plays a big role in supporting student success. A big thank you to all the caregivers who came along to the recent Year 10 Parent Interview Evening as well as the Year 9 Parent evenings earlier in the term – we really appreciate you taking the time to connect with us. It was great to have those conversations and strengthen the links between school and home.

We’re looking forward to seeing more of you at the Senior Parent-Teacher Evenings in Term 2, Thursday 1st & Tuesday 6th May. An email will be sent next Thursday with instructions on how to book.
