Who’s Who at Cashmere High School - Ben Buckendahl

Mr Ben Buckendahl and his family — Image by: Cashmere High School

Kia ora koutou, I'm Ben Buckendahl and I love teaching at Cashmere High School. My high school experience was a great one. I grew up in Nelson and attended Waimea College. From about 16 years old, I knew I wanted to be a high school teacher to try and pass on more positive experiences to more students. I had so many awesome teachers! Teachers who were approachable, caring, Inspirational, intensional. I also had the odd teacher that was none of those things. Through this, I knew the type of teacher I wanted to be. The type of teacher I could be.

I'm just about to finish up on my 9th year of teaching, all of which have been here at Cashmere in the Mathematics and Statistics Faculty, and I don't think I will ever leave. I love being a part of this community and my colleagues in the Mathematics and Statistics Faculty are absolutely unreal - a true pleasure to work with, why would I run away from this?! There isn't a day when I wake up gutted that I have to go to work.

I am also a part of the Sports Department as the Assistant Sports Director. This role has been great for me. Sport has always been a huge passion of mine. Helping students get involved in sport does give me a real boost. And now that we have Te Whare Rehia, our High Performance and Fitness Centre, managing how the students use that space in their own time gives me a great sense of joy too. Having opportunities to pass on my passion to others is incredibly rewarding. But the part of my job which occupies way too much of my mental space is Basketball Coaching. Gosh I love it. I usually coach the Year 9/10 team and can't wait for next season already!

My philosophy on teaching is that there is so much more to learn than just what is in the curriculum. Although teaching about quadratic equations, probability theories, and right angled triangles is important, I often think that learning empathy, respect, perseverance, generosity, leadership, communication skills, and how to operate as a team offers even more value to our students. I do try to be intentional in offering more to our students than just what they see on their report card under 'Mathematics and Statistics.'

Just this last week in our staffroom hallway are photos of all of the people who have contributed 30 years of service to the school. I REALLY want to get my face up there so hopefully I can make that happen. I'll be sticking around for a while yet.

The Fortnight Ahead
