Cashmere High School —

The Value of Punctuality

Principal’s Message

Tēnā koutou, e te whānau o Cashmere High School - Te iringa o Kahukura.

Punctuality is a fundamental habit that shapes success in education, careers, and life. Research shows that employers rank reliability and time management among the most valued workplace skills. Studies also indicate that people who consistently arrive on time are more likely to be trusted with leadership roles and career advancement.

At school, punctuality is equally important. Arriving late—whether to period one or after breaks—not only disrupts learning but also sets a pattern that can carry into future habits. To support a smooth and settled start to the day, students should aim to be on-site by 8:35 am to ensure they reach class before the 8:40 am first bell. Being on time maximises learning, demonstrates respect for others, and contributes to a positive school environment.

A special acknowledgment goes to all students who have maintained 100% attendance and punctuality to-date. Your commitment to being present and on time reflects great self-discipline and dedication. Keep setting the standard for excellence.

It’s hard to believe that we’re almost halfway through the first term of 2025. Looking around, I’m proud of how deeply students are engaging with their topics, assessments, and co-curricular activities—showing how the habits of punctuality and dedication translate into success both inside and outside the classroom.

Ngā mihi nui,
John Stradwick | Principal

House Athletics: Competition, Camaraderie & Community

House Athletics Day saw Blake, Britten, Cooper, Ngata, Rutherford, and Sheppard compete across a full programme of track and field events. Students showed skill and determination, with many trying new events and earning valuable points for their house.

Grounds-staff, Heads of House and House Captains all put in significant preparation, ensuring a well-run event. With both competitive and non-competitive entries, all students had the opportunity to participate. Our top athletes will now compete in inter-school meets.

The day concluded with the 8x50m student and staff relay, where Cooper House narrowly claimed victory by millimetres. The overall winning house will be announced next week.

Year 10 Hīkoi – Exploring Ōtautahi’s History

Throughout the year, all Year 10 Social Studies classes will take part in a Hīkoi (walk) exploring key historical sites of Ōtautahi. This experience provides insight into both Māori and Pākehā histories, deepening students' connection to their city. Students visit significant locations such as Margaret Mahy Playground, Puari Pā at Victoria Square, and Tūranga, gaining a greater understanding of their cultural significance. A highlight is practicing kaitiakitanga by feeding the eels at The Terrace.

Celebrating Leadership and Academic Excellence

A huge congratulations to the 74 Year 13 students who achieved Excellence Endorsement in Level 2 NCEA last year. Your dedication and hard work have laid a strong foundation for future success, and we look forward to seeing even greater achievements from you this year.

At this week’s Year 13 assembly, we were also proud to recognise our 63 prefects, who represent all faculties in leadership roles across both curriculum and events. Their commitment to service and leadership strengthens our school community and ensures that student voice remains central to our decision-making.

Our focus remains firmly on supporting all Year 13 students in their next steps—whether that’s University Entrance (UE) and tertiary pathways or moving directly into employment and apprenticeships. For those entering the workforce or trades, we understand you have important goals to achieve this year, and we are committed to supporting you every step of the way.

Chalking Up a Win

Last week, our six houses competed in the chalk drawing challenge, showcasing their art and design skills. The task was to create an image that celebrated their Head of House and the passions that define them. It was a timed challenge, and the outcomes were excellent—judged by the creativity and attention to detail. Britten House took the win, but judge for yourself from the images below:

Help Needed for Reader/Writers

We urgently need more people to assist being a Reader and Writer or just a Writer for students sitting junior assessments. Can you help? Do you know of a friend or family member who could volunteer? It will involve an hour or two of your time when a student sits an assessment.
Any questions or queries please email Anja Naughton, Acting Head of Faculty - Student Support (naa@cashmere.school.nz).
