Careers Team Update
Tertiary Presenations & Events
Term 3 has been an important term for students with subject selections, university scholarships, accommodation applications, polytechnic applications, and course planning sessions. We also had a variety of courses, events, and experiences which students participated in. To name a few, these included University Open Days, Ara Tours, UC Law Day, an ETCO visit and a presentation by Studylink.
Career Events & Activities
Many students engaged in taster experiences at Ara, including Barista Tasters, Sparky for a Day, Plumber for a Day, Introduction to Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Music Arts, Art & Design. These days are a great way to get an insight into the industry and some hands-on experiences.
I was very fortunate to experience a day on the HMNZS Canterbury. I was hosted by the NZ Defence Force and have come away with a whole world of knowledge in this sector. Please come and see me if you’d like to hear about the many pathway opportunities that are on offer with the NZ Defence Force, I am also keen to share my experience.
Career Expo
Our Passion, Purpose & Pathways, Careers Expo was held again in August with a great amount of interest and support from students and whānau.
With over 25 education providers, training organisations, businesses, and industry professionals. Students had the chance to learn about lots of different career ideas and speak face-to-face with providers from across the country to help them explore their future pathways.
This is also a great opportunity for students to make the links between their subject choices at school and their future career.
Work Experience
During Term 3 several work experience opportunities took place. With the help of local businesses, we can offer these opportunities to our students and are always looking for more. If you are part of a business that would like to offer work experience to our students, please reach out and we can add you to our database.
During Term 3 we had Vinnie Hayes at Winchester Electrical, Felix Ingram at Somerfield Primary School, Ruby Lovelock at Christchurch South Library as well as Caitlin Beale placed at Kidsfirst Waltham to gain some real-life experience in their future careers.
Students also got to experience tours of business across different industries to give them a taster of their future pathway options. We’d like to thank Akaroa Salmon, ETCO, Ara, Next Gen Diary Farming and Lyttelton Engineering for taking the time to show students around the business and chat with them of the various options within their industries.
CV Preparation & Job Opportunites
The silly season is just about here and that means lots of casual and part time holiday work is on offer. Now is a great time for students to get their CV’s ready. Mrs Powell is on-hand to offer advice, learn tips on how to format, structure and create the best CV possible. And be sure to keep checking on Careerwise for any job opportunities.
Defensive Driving
The last Defensive Driving course for the year took place during the holidays, with plenty of students being upskilled on their driving, and adding a valuable life skill to their toolkit.
