Year 13 Head of School

Cashmere High School —

he Year 13 theme is again "be a jungle tiger, not a zoo tiger" and it is fantastic to see many Year 13 students taking up this challenge.

Attending tutorials, speaking to subject teachers and being proactive in their studies are all great examples of this theme evident during Term 1. It also relates to getting involved in the many opportunities at CHS, developing leadership skills and being role models for our junior students. This role modelling has been evident throughout Term 1 with Year 13’s taking lead roles in House Competitions, Peer Leading sessions, volunteering initiatives and supporting junior students at lunchtimes and around the school.

Year 13 is an extremely busy one for students as they work hard to complete their final year of NCEA, get involved in House events and other extra-curricular activities and juggle this with planning their future pathways beyond Cashmere High School. I encourage students to make an appointment with Mr Bennett, our school Careers Advisor (bem@cashmere.school.nz), or myself, should they wish to discuss anything regarding their future pathway. There are many information sessions continuing throughout Term 2 so students need to continue to stay up to date with their school emails, our year group Google Classroom and the school Careers website.

Some notable mentions from Term 1 include: Phoebe Laird and Natasha Frame for their commitment and results in Swimming over their time at Cashmere High School; Henry McMecking for his extensive success in Triathlon during Term 1; Amélie McKay for her Mountain Biking success and being chosen to represent NZ as part of the Mountain Bike Squad; Eva Pepperall and Henry Clatworthy for their success at the Maadi Cup Rowing Regatta; and Ateca Vola, Simone Vete, Finn Tait and Thomas Talosaga Tairu for their leadership and performance at the regional PolyFest celebration. These students have demonstrated that with hard work, effort and commitment, outstanding results are possible.

Special mention must also go to our COVE Award winners this term Myles Duggan, Evie Boyd, Conal Smith, Jono Blackie and Luke Bullmore. As the premier award at our Principal’s assemblies these students have gone above and beyond to demonstrate our school’s values and are fantastic role models for their peers and younger students.

It has been great to see Year 13 students balancing academic endeavours with extensive involvement in extra-curricular activities. However, students should be reminded that whilst they are allowed to be off school site during study breaks, at lunchtime and at interval, this is no excuse for missing class or being late.

As always if you have any concerns or queries pleasedon't hesitate to get in touch with me directly by phone (3374720) or email (bzh@cashmere.school.nz).
