Economics Students Visit Sydenham Bakery
Year 11 students enjoy the taste of success
Our local Sydenham Bakery graciously hosted our Year 11 Economics students to help them with their research for their internal assessments. The students learned about what goes into running a successful business from choosing goals and setting prices to increasing productivity.
Sydenham Bakery is an exquisite example of a successful kiwi family business. Established decades ago, Sydenham Bakery is now one of the most well-known bakeries in the city with two busy stores in Sydenham and Harewood serving Christchurch residents. Sydenham Bakery also caters for various events all year round.
Sydenham Bakery is an exciting study for our budding Year 11 economists. In the bakery, students witnessed first-hand the daily operations including how the food is made and how a production batch is done. Sheryl MacGibbon, the store’s co-owner and manager, talked to the students about the bakery’s history, goals, and promotion tactics.
Visiting the bakery was an amazing opportunity for our students to understand how theory and practice are closely tied. They saw the concepts we discuss in the classroom animated in an actual real-life setting and explained by a successful business owner.
On their way out, our students were treated with Sydenham Bakery’s award-winning buttered hot cross buns. It surely was a tasty day to be an economist!
