Cashmere High School —

Its been a very successful start to sport at Cashmere with high participation rates and some outstanding achievements.

Highlight team results were achieved by the Senior Boys Volleyball team winning the Mainland Championships and the Boys Rowing Eight making history finishing 7th in the Maadi Cup. There were a huge number of individual results throughout the term with gold medals being achieved at the Canterbury Athletics Championships, South Island Mountain Bike Championships and the NZSS Triathlon Nationals. Details of the results from Term 1 are highlighted below.

Term 1 Highlights:

· Adventure Racing – Cashmere teams took out 1st, 2nd and 4th places at the SISS Adventure Racing Championships 12 hour race that was held in Kaikoura during the April Holidays.

· Athletics – Cashmere had two very successful athletics meetings during Term 1 with strong results at both the Canterbury Championships and South Island Championships both held at Nga Puna Wai. At the Canterbury Championships Charlie Hazlett was awarded the overall top Senior Male Athlete Award after his success in the 1500m and 3000m races.

The top performers at the South Island Championships were: Brynne Gordan 1st U14 800m and 1500m, Leah Pratten 3rd U14 Long Jump and 3rd 300m U16 Hurdles, Lilla Faivre 3rd U15 Long Jump, Brooke Goldsmith 2nd U16 100m, Esther Pratten 2nd U16 Triple Jump, Morgan Flanagan 3rd U19 1500m Angus Sevier 1st U15 800m and 1500m, Ben Waldron 3rd U15 Hammer Throw and 1st Javelin, Matthew Winter 3rd U16 High Jump, Thompson Hamilton 1st U16 Hammer Throw, Charlie Hazlett 1st U19 1500m and 3000m.

· Bowls – Canterbury Championships Singles - 1st Jack Bonner, 2nd Eli Dunn-Stevens, Triples – 3rd Boys team.

· Cricket - Boys 1st XI again qualified for the Gillete Cup Quarter Finals after finishing 2nd in qualifying tournament and then beating Rangiora HS in a playoff match.

· Cycling – South Island Age Group Carnival – Meghan Baker three golds, two silver and a bronze in the U17 category.

· Dragon Boating - The girls team earned 2nd place for their turns race and the mixed team placed 4th in the Canterbury Championships.

· Futsal - Senior Boys finished 2nd South Island team and 11th overall at the NZSS Nationals in Wellington.

· Korfball – Cashmere teams took out both the junior and senior competitions with Isaac Rademaker and Will Hanlon taking out the top scorer awards.

· Mountain Biking – South Island Championships – Cashmere finished the 2nd school overall in the South Island Championships highlighted by these individual results:

Amelie MacKay U20: 1st Cross Country, 3rd Enduro, Annabel Bligh U20: 2nd Cross Country, Fergus O'Neill U20: 2nd Cross Country, Leah Smith U17: 1st Downhill and 1st Enduro, Maria Laurie U17: 1st Cross Country, Winni Goldsbury U16: 1st Downhill, 1st Enduro, 4th Cross Country, Jack Collins U15: 1st Downhill, 1st Enduro, John Laurie U15: 3rd Cross Country.

· Ocean Swimming: Cashmere was awarded the Open Water Champion School 2021 on aggregate results with these two top results Alannah McGuinness (12CAR), 2nd Female 16-19y 5000 metres and Niamh Cooper (9SYJ), 3rd Female 12-13y 750 metres.

· Rowing: Maadi Cup – Silver BU17 Four, 7th BU18 Eight making the final for the first time ever. South Island – Gold BU18 Novice Double, Gold BU17 Four, Gold BU18 Novice Quad, Bronze BU17 Eight. George Higgins, Oscar Clatworthy, Sam Clelland and William Anderson had successful trials and made the South Island U18 Rowing Squad who beat the North Island in a series of races during the holidays.

· Swimming – Cashmere had a number of placings at the Canterbury Swim Championships. Charlotte Murphy, Georgina Cockfield, Phoebe Laird, Ethan Cone, Max Gardiner, Natasha MacGibbon, Eliza O’Meagher and Thomas Lyall all picking up top 3 placings in their events.

· Triathlon - Nationals – Henry McMecking 2nd Under 19 Boys, Morgan Flanagan 3rd Under 19 Girls, Thomas Newsom 5th Under 14 Boys

· Volleyball: Senior Boys A won the Mainland Championships and finished 2nd in the Canterbury Championships. Senior Girls B finished 2nd in Div II Canterbury Championships and also 2nd in the Satellite Championship. Both Senior teams travelled to Palmerston North for the National Volleyball Champs with the Boys finishing 5th in Div 2 and the girls 7th in Div 3.
