Student Council and House Events

Meet the Student Council

The members of the school Student Council are the Head Students, the House Captains, the Student Board of Trustees representative and elected members from each of the Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 cohorts. The Council meet every fortnight and organise most of the major school and House events. They choose our charity causes and they bring any issues from students forward for discussion. Cashmere High School Student Councils are always positive, productive and all about ensuring the best experiences for the students at this school.

Our recent Boyle River camp was another fantastic team building and goal setting exercise. The students worked together over the weekend to establish the guidelines and fundamental values for the 2020 council. They were set team and individual challenges over the course of the weekend and all of the students met these challenges with gusto. The high and low ropes courses were especially daunting but it was great to see students leave their comfort zones and meet the challenges head on. The staff present were most impressed and predict great things from this group of exceptional students.

House Events – Term 1 2021

Our programme of events begins with Athletics Day on March 4th. This is always a day of vibrancy, fun and excitement. If you haven’t yet experienced a Cashmere High School House Athletics Day, check out the clip on YouTube. It shows just how great the event can be. Students create a vibrant visual symphony in their House colours and the events are as much about participation and enjoyment as they are about athletic excellence. Every single student has the opportunity to ensure success for their House by getting involved in as many events as possible.

Our second House event for Term One is the House Olympics. Each House chooses a Basketball, Football, Netball and a Dodgeball team. These teams must have a mix of gender and year groups. They compete at lunchtimes over the course of week eight (March 22 – 26) and an overall event winner is then crowned.

We conclude Term 1 with the Talent Quest. Students audition to make the final line up of eight acts. These acts perform at lunchtime on April 16th. Over the years we have had acrobats, pogo stickers, hoop dancers, a performance painter … as well as loads of exceptional musical acts. Seeing a display of the student talent at Cashmere High School is always a great way to end the term. Make sure that you listen out for audition times as every audition earns House points.

Junior Activities Day 2020

Our final House event for 2020 was the ever popular Junior Activities Day. Year 9 and 10 students were divided into groups and rotated around a number of fun and challenging activities including jousting, earth ball, capture the flag, a bouncy obstacle castle course and charades. The event concluded with the tug-o-war. It was fantastic to see that the juniors of Sheppard House stepped up and won the day for their leader Mr Sang who has stepped down as Head of House after several years of fine service. Mr Kuze and Mr Ussher have also stepped down as Heads of Rutherford and Ngata. Thanks so much for all of the time and effort you’ve all put into the Cashmere High School House programme. We wish your successors Miss France (Sheppard), Mr Riepen (Rutherford) and Mr Walbran (Ngata) every success.

The key is involvement. The school values of Citizenship, Opportunities, Vibrancy and Excellence are all apparent within our House system … but making the most of the opportunities offered is the most vital of all.
