Sport at Cashmere ended on a high in 2020 with a full programme of events going ahead in Term 4.

Cashmere students had some outstanding results across a huge variety of sports with some highlights summarised below:

Adventure Racing

Our junior adventure racing team travelled to Great Barrier Island at the end of 2020 to compete in the finals of the Get2Go competition. The week involves competing in a range of disciplines including running, navigation, sailing, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, swimming. The team worked hard throughout the week and managed to finish an outstanding 4th in New Zealand.

Athletics
Seven Cashmere students travelled to Tauranga for the NZSS Athletics Champs after a very disrupted 2020 season. Gracie Pratten won a silver medal in the long jump and a bronze in the triple jump, Esther Pratten won bronze in the long jump and triple jump while Angus Sevier ran an outstanding race in the Y9 road race to win gold for Cashmere.

Korfball
Cashmere finished 2nd in the South Island Korfball Championships going down in a very tense final to Middleton Grange. Cashmere senior students supported two junior teams throughout the tournament ensuring the future of korfball at Cashmere is bright.

Ocean Swimming
In Term 4 last year, we formed a new Cashmere High School Open-Water Swim Team. This team has been training hard over the summer at Waltham outdoor pool and Lake Rua, with professional coaching from two of New Zealand’s most accomplished open-water swimmers Dan Abel and Chloe Harris from Fit & Abel.

Rock Climbing
Evie Boyd finished 4th in the Juniors and Willow Cook finished 2nd in the Youth grade at the 2020 NZ Youth Bouldering Championships.

Rowing
Cashmere had its most successful South Island Club Championships to date which saw the squad make 11 A finals and five B finals. From these finals the squad took home two titles in the Boys U19 Eight and the Mens Novice Double. Further medals were achieved in the Mens Novice Four, Mens Club Eight, Mens Novice Quad and Boys U17 Quad. The rowing squad have three further regattas in Term 1 with the Maadi Cup in late March concluding the season.

Triathlon
Henry McMecking won the Senior Boys title at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships.

Volleyball
The Junior Girls team finished 2nd at the Canterbury Champs with Esther Pratten, Brooke Smith and Tilly Harris making the tournament team. The team then travelled to Invercargill and finished 3rd in the South Island Championships with Esther and Brooke making the tournament team. The Year 9 girls team also travelled to the South Island Championships and managed to win the Division Two Competition.

In December Esther, Brooke and Gracie Pratten were named in the Junior Women New Zealand squad who will be training and competing in 2021.

Volleyball (beach)
Noah Smith finished 2nd in the U17 New Zealand Provincial Beach Championships held in Northland during the summer holidays.

As usual all information for sport can be found on our dedicated website, www.sporty.co.nz/cashmere. Students can register and pay to join a sport online as well as find online draws, transport arrangements and defaults. Winter sport registration begins mid way through the term and students should regularly check the notices to ensure they don’t miss out.

We are always looking for new coaches, managers, sponsors or parents keen to get involved with sport at Cashmere High. Please email Mr Jones jnm@cashmere.school.nz if you are interested.
