World Vision Senior Scholarship Summit

At the end of last year, I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to attend the 2021 World Vision Senior Scholarship Summit during the summer break.

The summit began with an early flight, on the morning of Monday 25th January, to Auckland. I, along with 29 other senior students, spent three immersive days gaining the knowledge to develop our leadership skills and understanding of social justice. At this conference, we had the privilege to listen to inspirational speakers from various backgrounds share their insight and personal experiences. We learnt and discussed fragile concepts in places of crisis; how World Vision aids those places with emergency relief or community development support. Also, how the world is losing grip of the balance between the beautiful and the broken - through ideas like systemic injustices and “The Tragedy of the Commons”, the global/local food crises, unconscious biases and other impactful discussions. We even spoke to a man named Vitalis who is from Kenya, who shared some of the struggles he faced growing up in an impoverished community. This whole experience gave us the opportunity to learn about how/why World Vision is trying to help those in need. Their work is especially necessary after the horrendous year we have had.
