Fidget Spinners

Gavin Burn —

Please find here an update from the school with regards to fidget spinners...

Kia ora Whānau

As I’m sure you are aware the fidget spinner seems to be the latest and greatest toy.

As a school we have been aware of these spinners for some time and we acknowledge that some of our students have these as a tool to help them focus on their learning. We made the decision to allow these at school as it was helpful for some.

What has now happened is that many many students are bringing these to school and into our learning spaces during learning time and that these are actually disrupting the learning environment. In addition to this it has come to our attention that some students have been trading and even buying and selling fidget spinners at school.

To provide you with some clarity we would like to share with you our expectations and the messages that we have given to our students, these are …

  • Fidget spinners are not to be seen during learning time (they could be in your pocket)

  • Fidget spinners are not to be traded, swapped, bought or sold at school

  • Fidget spinners may be used in the playground at break times.

Please note the emphasis on break times and feel free to remind your children that we do not expect to see fidget spinners during learning time.

It is also important to note here that if fidget spinners, soft toys or other toys go missing or get stolen we (staff) will not be spending time finding these or getting involved, as mentioned this is a learning opportunity for children. If it’s something of special significance or value please don’t bring it to school.

If you have concerns about this or do not want your children to bring their fidget spinners or soft toys to school then please choose to have this conversation with them.

Please feel free to contact our principal if you wish to discuss this further.
