Pīrere Living Springs Camp 2018 - Life in a Bunk Room

Lucy Martin —

Bunkhouse 2. A beautiful wooden hut, the door swings open. The steps creak beneath me layered with lumpy carpet. Bunk Room 2D a small, but beautiful room… my bunk mates step into the room.

A cool breeze flows through the window and the smell of fresh cooking wafts throughout the bunk room. A sudden scramble to get to the beds. As we start relaxing we realise that it’s five minutes till bunk room inspection. We hurriedly stuff our suitcases under the bed as the teacher walks in she checks in all the corners and to our delight she gives us a reproving smile.

After a delicious meal of butter chicken we get to hang out in our bunk rooms before the big game of spot light. We are super puffed out from animal survival (a game half orienteering half bingo tag). I invite my bunkmate to play a board game with me, but it ends soon with a burst of giggles from the double bed below.

We step out into the cold evening light and line up outside the dining room, we are so excited that we don’t notice the seekers starting to count. With 30 seconds to find a spot to hide we desperately hide behind the hedge and to our delight we are not seeked out. After four more rounds we are bleary eyed. after our supper we get ready for bed. With fifteen minutes till lights out one of my bunk mates starts an adventurous bedtime story and in no time we are fast asleep.

The next morning we weren’t allowed up until 7.00am which was fine with us, because we were all very tired. We only had an hour to get the whole bunk room cleaned up and get ready for breakfast. After an hour of rushing we were relaxing in the dining room and eating full bowls of creamy yogurt and cereal. Our bunk room was suddenly called out, we had won the bunkroom inspection! It was free time after breakfast so we went to hang out in our bunk room, beautiful orange light cast shadows across the room like the slow dance had just started at the ball. We changed beds and got into comfortable clothes as we knew we had a long walk to Don’s Hut ahead of us. We relaxed in the dim light and chatted like the dawn chorus. Bunk room life was just beginning.
