Incorporation of Te Pae Kererū into the school’s name

Gavin Burn —

We are proud to share the news that the MOE have approved a change to our school name, incorporating the Māori name for our school 'Te Pae Kererū'.

Following on from our last update (which you can read here) we are proud to share with you the news that the Ministry of Education (MOE) have approved the change to our school name.

Our school name will now officially be Cashmere Primary Te Pae Kererū.

Over the next two terms you will see and hear this name being used more and more as staff, students and community members embrace this change.

This change has both historical and cultural significance. Cashmere Primary School (CPS as we know it) hasn't always been known as such.

We were originally known as the Port Hills Aided School (1900), then Cashmere School (1907) and later Cashmere Primary School (n.d).

Incorporating the Māori name gifted to us by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tūāhuriri acknowledges our bicultural heritage and unique location here on the Port Hills.

Background Information:

Te Pae Kererū is the Te Reo Māori name that has been approved by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tūāhuriri and gifted to Cashmere Primary. The name translates as ‘the perch of the kererū’ and is reflective of the abundance of kererū within the wider Cashmere/Port Hills area and that kererū are frequent visitors to the school. The theme around kererū was incorporated into the names of our learning teams and new learning spaces.
