Sewing Success

Sarah Dyer —

This term, the year 7 students began their first technology rotation of soft textiles.

Embarking on a new learning journey is always exciting. As a school, we have purchased sewing machines and established a space for our Year 7 and 8 students to learn the basics of sewing and the considerations that need to be made when creating a practical item for everyday use.

Beginning by looking at different textiles enabled the students to gain a greater understanding of the fabrics that are used to create soft material items.  They learnt about the journey of cotton, wool and linen from source to product, and the many different ways that the materials are utilised.

Next came the understanding of how to use a sewing machine. For some, it was the first opportunity that they had had to use a sewing machine and over the course of the term, their confidence increased.

Stepping through the design process the students went on to create their own reversible bag. They were able to choose from a number of different fabrics and considered how their bag would be utilised on a daily basis. Each bag has its own unique characteristics. Learning about seams, right-sides-facing, the joys of unpicking when mistakes are made, careful cutting and a plethora of instructional steps to follow, the students not only honed their practical sewing skills, but also practised great patience, perseverance and resilience.
