Mr Scott Thelning —

Smith puts a new spin on "Wheels Day". It has been great to welcome him back to school after not an ideal start to his Year 8 Cathedral Grammar rugby season. We love your attitude - great to have you back at school!

Kia ora ki te whanau o te Cathedral Grammar

I hope you have a productive fortnight and have been enjoying this Spring like weather. It is wonderful to see the flowers starting to pop out of the ground, the weather warm a little and the days start to get a little longer.

Parent/Caregiver Survey

Hopefully you saw this appear in your inbox yesterday afternoon. By the time school started this morning we had close to 100 responses, which is a great start and we very much appreciate the time people have taken to complete this important task for us. The data from this survey will be used by the Board and the Senior Leadership Team over the coming month as we develop our strategy for the next 3-5 years, and so it is important we have a high response rate to feed into this process in a meaningful manner. The deadline for completion is 4pm, Wednesday 19 August. Click here to access the survey.

Whole School Community Baptism Service

These services across the year are an important part of being a member of our Christian school community and we value gathering together in our Cathedral. A lot of planning, preparation and rehearsing goes into these and the output on the day is always fabulous. I look forward to seeing you all at the Cathedral this Sunday for a 5pm start. Chaplain Teresa will be sending home separate communication regarding logistics, including arrival times for different groups of students.

Year 8 Leavers Hoodies

You may have noticed over the past week that our Year 8 students are proudly wearing these hoodies whilst on site at school. In the past the students were given these quite late in the year and then given quite a few restrictions as to when they could wear them.

To me it didn't feel right that we organised this, parents paid for them and then through timing and compliance we didn't provide much of an opportunity for them to actually wear them, especially as it seems to be viewed as 'uncool' to wear them once you have left primary school.

So, this year we purchased them earlier and have allowed them to be worn once the students are on site during the day, just as they could with the school polar fleece. Formal school uniform still to be worn to and from school, in Chapel/Prep Assemblies/formal events and out of school trips.

It is a part of being a Year 8 at our school, and now they can actually enjoy it. Thank you to the team for organising these, the students love them.

Sporting Success

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 hockey and football teams who have made it through the Independent Zone stage to qualify for the Canterbury Primary School Championships. There was no rugby at the zone event but our rugby team will also be attending the Canterbury Championships as they have gone through their Friday competition undefeated thus far! Rugby has been missing from our sporting offering for a good number of years and it was great to get it back up and running successfully last year. Thank you Mr Bertie!

Don't forget the survey.

Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement.

Ngā mihi nui,

Scott Thelning
