What are the Qualities of a Good Leader?

Ms Brigit McCormack —

This was the question the Y7's were asked when they started to look at the qualities and skills needed for leadership in their Mitre sessions last term.

One of their tasks was to interview a person who they perceived to be good leader.
The students impressively managed to interview a range of people including parents, grandparents, teachers, an All Black, a Black Stick, sports coaches, A Bishop and a US fighter pilot.

In summarising the answers, the students were able to make connections and come up with some key findings and common traits for leadership.

The most common traits for Leadership they found included

  • Integrity
  • Trust
  • Honesty
  • To be a good listener
  • Have a good work ethic and not be afraid of hard work
  • Lead by example
  • Be a good communicator
  • Be resilient
  • Be consistent
  • Be a good communicator
  • Be humble

The Y7’s will be our 2019 student leaders. They will have many opportunities over the next few months to learn more about leadership and demonstrate the above skills and qualities.
