Grammar Weekly Winter Sport Success!

Miss Ella Dowgray —

Well done to all who competed in our Hockey, Netball, Football and Table Tennis teams this year. It is fantastic to see everyone taking part and enjoying their Friday afternoon sport. A huge congratulations to our Y7/8 Netball and Y7/8 Football teams, and Ryan and Ray (Table Tennis) who all won their divisions!

7/8 Netball Champions

1st in D grade competition

Well done to our 7/8 Maroon Netball team, who finished 1st in their weekly winter sport competition. The team fought hard against their opposition, Halswell Black, in the final last Friday to win convincingly 26-7. Congratulations, girls!!

7/8 Football Champions

1st= in A grade competition

Another big congratulations to our 7/8 Maroon Football team who finished 1st= . The final was a tough match against Sumner, an opposition that beat us during the round robin, hasn’t lost a match in four seasons, and contains a number of Canterbury rep players. Our team shone! We played with the best heart, focus, and intensity we had mustered all season. We converted almost all of our scoring opportunities. We quickly scored first and, for the rest of the game, we were always neck and neck or ahead by a goal. In the final minute, Sumner scored a late equaliser and we shared the A grade title with them as co-winners. The boys played their hearts out and supported each other brilliantly. As a coach, says Mr Simon Lean-Massey, it was a proud moment. Well done, boys!

5/6 Table Tennis Champions

1st in B grade competition

Congratulations to Ryan and Ray, who worked hard to win their table tennis grade!

7/8 Hockey Champions??

Our 7/8 Hockey Maroon team went into their final game tied in first place with St Joseph's Pap Gold and Sumner A.  We needed a win against St Joseph's Pap Blue to keep our place at the top, and we secured it convincingly! Unfortunately, our tournament was a Round Robin and the results from the other games have not been processed. We are still waiting to hear whether we finished as champions.

We played our final game with the same determination and skill we have shown all season, which resulted in a 10-0 lead at half time. After discussions between the coaches, it was decided that Grammar deserved the win and the game was kept fun for all by mixing the schools together in a Boys vs Girls match for the second half.

Well done, everyone. Here's to a very successful, unbeaten season for the Grammar Maroon team!

Other Results

Table Tennis

It was exciting to be able to offer Table Tennis as part of our weekly sport this year. Our participants competed fiercely and  enjoyed the competition very much. Congratulations to Andrew and Gregory,  and Jack and Sam who finished second in their divisions, and to William and Ben, Ollie and Matthew, and Eloise and William who finished third.

Hockey 7/8 White

Our Y7/8 White team have had a challenging season, however we pulled everything together in our final game to finish our season on a high. Whilst we didn't win, something seemed to click and we came together as a team to play some wonderful hockey.  We were calling for the ball, linking some beautiful passes and as a result,  scored some outstanding goals. Well done Natalya, for your perseverance in the circle! Also,  well done to Duncan,  for some excellent running - it seems our usual goalkeepers have really found their place on the field! Everyone played their hearts out and thoroughly enjoyed the game. Well done all, what a great way to end the season!

Hockey 5/6 Maroon

5th in A grade competition

Our Y5&6 Maroon team played off for 5th and 6th in the A grade competition against Paparoa St A. We were 6 goals up at half time so decided to rearrange our positions, playing the defence up front and moving our forwards to the back. There was some excellent passing, using the whole field and everyone enjoyed the game. We won convincingly 11-2, completing a successful season. Well done everyone!

Our Y5&6 White team played off for 5th and 6th in the C grade competition against the Ilam Cheetahs. Due to lack of turf space,  we played our last game on grass.
