Girls' School Waiata

Brigit McCormack and Richard Larsen —

The sound of rhythmic clapping and singing has been heard emanating from the Girl’s School every Wednesday morning this term as students from all year groups came together to learn a traditional Māori waiata. This activity has brought the Girls' School community together in a unique and exciting way.

The students have been working hard to learn the lyrics and master the hand and body movements each week in preparation for the final Prep School assembly of the term. The performance was a beautiful way to showcase our school's diversity and cultural appreciation.

One of the most significant benefits of this project has been the opportunity for students from different year groups to work together. Senior students have taken on the role of leaders, teaching and guiding their younger peers through the intricacies of the song and movement. This cross-year collaboration has not only improved the overall learning experience but has also fostered a sense of community and connection within the school.

Next term’s Wednesday morning sessions will focus on sustainability across our school with interactive workshops and activities, students will learn about sustainable practices and how they can be implemented in their daily lives.

Performing the Waiata was a great way to finish the term. It has been a term full of learning and new opportunities and the Girls' School teaching team has truly appreciated the efforts of all of our students.

We would like to thank all parents for their support over the term and we wish all families a safe and happy Easter break.

We look forward to seeing the girls back in May in their winter uniforms.
