Year 1 Botanical Garden Visit

On Wednesday, 4 April the Y1 children walked to the Botanical Gardens for an outdoor educational lesson about the ecosystem of bugs, birds and trees within our New Zealand native forests. The lesson was taken by experienced education rangers who work at our Botanical Gardens.

The children learned the names of different New Zealand native birds. They practised imitating their bird calls and learned why it is so important for our trees to have birds. A favourite activity at the end was dressing up as different creatures of the forest and re-enacting the consequences of people cutting down trees without planting more.

This term the children will focus their topic learning on Enterprise and Service. The children will create a mid-winter Christmas grotto and raise money for charity. They will also learn about the importance of Service and what it means in the Christian sense. This will link nicely in with a special Service Assembly at the end of the term.
