Boys' House Hockey
Thursday saw the rest of the Boys’ School at Nunweek for the annual House Hockey, played belatedly under wonderfully un-wintery, sunny skies. With ten pupils absent, another six playing cricket, and two 1st XI players injured, team numbers were tight, and fitness definitely played its part. However, such is the depth of hockey in the school, and so well complemented on the day by fine performances from our non-hockey men, that a tremendous tournament was enjoyed. Results were very close, with goal difference required to split the teams in the Senior division, and the Overall result. Thank you to Mr Brooke for the essential, impartial maths!

So, congratulations to Hansen, 2017 House Hockey Champions and winners of the Snape Cup; and to Merton, Fair Play Winners with 42 points out of 45; (Parr & Gibson, 40; Hansen 38).

Thank you to Hugh Duston and George Ladley who would have far rather been playing than umpiring, for their skill with the whistle, and patience with their injuries; and thank you, too, to the staff involved.

Grammar Wins Quick Strike Cricket Tournament
On Thursday 9 November, the Cathedral Grammar Boys’ Six-a-Side cricket team, along with nine other Canterbury primary schools, competed in the Quick Strike Cricket tournament at South Hagley Park. This very short and exciting form of cricket involves each team batting for just five overs in matches lasting around 45 minutes.

Grammar won the four pool matches convincingly, against Russley, Prebbleton, Queenspark and St. Martin's. This pitted us against Mt Pleasant, the other pool winner, in the grand final. We were put into bat and responded with an imposing 55 off 5 overs. Tight bowling and fielding saw Mt Pleasant restricted to 36 in reply.

Well done to Jaiden Beer, Jonty Foote, Tim Seeto, Lachlan McVicar, George Pearse and Joel Prince, who each contributed to this excellent result. Thanks to Mr Manning for his assistance with the team on the day.

8G visit with Development Christchurch Limited
Last Wednesday, two groups of pupils from 8G travelled to New Brighton to meet with representatives of Development Christchurch Limited. DCL are responsible for the regeneration of the New Brighton foreshore and retail area. Currently, they are building a new children’s playground next to the New Brighton library. Plans are also afloat to develop a saltwater pool complex alongside the playground.

The girls wanted to discuss the plans and visit the site as part of their H&G current unit. Each group is conducting an inquiry around the theme Regenerate which involves them planning and designing a space to re-develop in the central city area. Both groups who visited the site in New Brighton are planning similar projects of their own.

Thank you to Cecilia, Rebecca and David from CDL and to Mr Brendon Antiss (father of Lexie in 4G) from the Christchurch City Council for helping to make the visit possible.

Girls’ School Day Out
Last Friday, the Girls’ School enjoyed their inaugural Girls’ Day Out at Spencer Park.

The day began with a beach clean-up. The girls worked with a buddy, sweeping along the beach both north and south, finding all manner of rubbish including plastics, paper, netting from fishing equipment and the remains of Guy Fawkes wrappers. All the rubbish was later collected in one large bag and returned to school for a competition to guess the total weight collected. with the closest guess winning a prize.

The rest of the day involved a sandcastle competition in House mentor lines, games and an opportunity to enjoy the park facilities.

Thank you to the staff who helped with the organization of the day and to our caretaker Mr Scarrott and tutor Mr Manning for bringing the school BBQ out for a sausage sizzle at lunchtime.
