Hamilton Diocese celebrates the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate

Teresa Fernandez —

Nostra Aetate is a Vatican II document, published in 1965, that established the relationship of the Catholic Church with other religions.

A celebration was held at the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 9 November following the 10.00am Mass. Monsignor Trevor Murray opened the session in karakia, welcome and an intro to Nostra Aetate. Representatives from the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Interfaith Committee shared how Nostra Aetate is at work today in both New Zealand Kirikiriroa and opened up discussion. The Waikato Interfaith Council members spoke briefly and lit candles for peace before a final blessing was delivered and further dialogue transpired over kai.

"I could feel the flow of the Holy Spirit from the introduction by Monsignor Trevor all the way to the final succinct and inclusive (impromptu) prayer by Paul. There were many highlights that participants took away: the sharing by the young, the commitment to work for peace among diverse religions (at least 10 different faith groups were represented), the opportunities for participation in the teachings of Nostra Aetate. The interreligious dialogue over kai was certainly heartening. There is hope for peace among religions if we act on the teachings of Nostra Aetate. " Teresa Fernandez

"The themes of the Church's social doctrine, such as commitment to peace and justice, care for our common home, and intercultural and interreligious dialogue, must also be more widely shared among the People of God." Final synod document 151
